While recently returning home from Paul's Larsen family reunion in Idaho, we took the scenic route along U. S. Highway 12 on the border of Montana and Idaho. Lewis and Clark followed this trail.
We had camped in our tent along this route with the family in the 1970s, and remembered how beautiful it was, so it was fun to return.
The route follows the Lochsa River, a Nez Perce word meaning rough water. Pronounced "lock-saw," the river has no dams, and is rated as one of the world's best for continuous whitewater.
There are no guard rails on the road, and at times the river is very wild and close!
Although in some places the river is calm.
There are bridges for trails leading off into the hills.
